Bernard Thomas "Stretch" Sharkey

Bernard Thomas Sharkey, lovingly known as “Stretch,” passed away peacefully on the morning of August 30, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on February 22, 1947, in New York, New York, Bernard was the son of Bernard Sharkey and Margaret (Stacey) Sharkey. He was predeceased by his brother, James Bernard Sharkey of Lehigh, Pennsylvania. Bernard’s life was defined by his love for family, his sharp wit, and his joy in the little things. He proudly served briefly in the U.S. Navy before beginning his career with Pan Am and later working at Foxwoods Casino. Beyond his work, Bernard was happiest when surrounded by family, sharing laughs, and playing games. Known affectionately as “the king of useless knowledge,” he could answer nearly any trivia question—especially when Jeopardy was on. Without a doubt, by the end of a conversation, you would have received a full lesson in the complex vernacular of "Stretchinese.” He also loved bingo, madlibs, and any chance to make gatherings lively. The Wobble-Inn, the Brook, the Backyard Olympics, the Pig Roasts, the Foxwoods Crew, the card game on Thanksgiving night, all-night games of Cards Against Humanity, New Year’s Eve, target shooting, and the Pro Bowl Tour were all highlights in Stretch's journey that he spoke of with happiness and laughter. One of his favorite sayings was, “There’s no such thing as a stupid question,” a phrase he often quoted when encouraging others to always ask questions and seek out answers, reflecting his curiosity and love of learning. He is survived by his daughter, Amy Sharkey, and his son, Joe Sharkey. Bernard was a proud grandfather to Eric Jarvis, Gwynn (Jarvis) Sprankle and her husband, Brian, Cowan Sharkey and his wife, Lillian, Summer (Moon) El Haouari and Brianna Dion as well as extended family Toby Gagnon and Lucien Mitchell, nieces and nephews. He also cherished his great-grandchildren, Ryder, Reed, and June. Bernard will be remembered for his big heart, his love of animals, and his ability to light up any room with his humor. He was the life of every party, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Family and Friends are invited to join a Celebration of Life on September 24,2025
