Hector Luis Rodriguez Grau

Today, we gather with heavy hearts, but also with deep gratitude, as we honor and remember the life of Hector Luis Rodriguez Grau—a brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, and faithful servant of God. Hector was born on August 20, 1938, in Morovis, Puerto Rico, to Francisco Rodriguez Pacheco and Amicecilia Grau. From his father, Hector learned discipline, responsibility, and the value of hard work. From his mother, a devoted homemaker and master of cooking, he learned care, patience, and the deep importance of family. These lessons shaped the man Hector would become. His early years were humble. Raised on Calle Loíza in Santurce and later educated at Dr. Agustín Stahl High School in Bayamón, Hector learned early how to walk a narrow path with integrity. He avoided harmful influences, choosing instead a life of quiet focus and self-control. Even then, he was already what many would come to know him as later in life—a quiet warrior, a man of strength who did not need noise or recognition to lead. Hector found joy in simple things. He loved baseball, swimming, and above all, being surrounded by family. He never lost his love for good Puerto Rican food—especially bacalao, patitas, and pastelón. Family gatherings were sacred to him, and many here will fondly remember his reputation as a master of dominoes, always competitive, always smiling, always present. At the center of Hector’s life was love—true, steadfast, lifelong love. Hector often said that when he first saw Rosario “Sarin” Rodriguez Avilés, it was love at first sight. He married her, and she remained the only woman he ever loved. Their marriage was not just a partnership, but a testimony of faithfulness, loyalty, and devotion. When Sarin passed on July 7, 2021, Hector carried that loss quietly, trusting God through his grief, holding firmly to the hope of reunion. Together, Hector and Sarin built a strong and loving family. He leaves behind his children: Sandra Vilmarie Rivera, Hector Ulises Rodriguez, Luisa Odalis Rolon, and Sarimar Milagros Avellanet. He was deeply proud of each of them. His legacy continues through his grandchildren—Alexander, Ulises, Hector Luis, Yovanna Marie, Yesenia Emilie, Yiselle Imari, Arianna, Gabriela, Josael, Sofia Isabella, and Kylie—and through seven great grandchildren, each one precious to him. But to fully understand Hector, we must speak about his faith. After high school, while working for Otis Elevators, Hector experienced a moment that could only be described as divine intervention. He lost his balance and fell seventeen floors down an elevator shaft—an accident that should have ended his life. But it did not. God spared him. Though his recovery was long and painful, this moment became the turning point of his life. During that season, Hector found a Bible that had been left in his car. When he opened it, it fell to Psalm 116:8–9: “For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.” Those words were not just read—they were lived. Hector gave his heart fully to Jesus Christ under the pastoral guidance of Rev. Hector Ramos in Newburgh, New York. From that point forward, his life became a testimony of quiet obedience and unwavering faith. He did not preach loudly, but he lived clearly. He did not demand attention, but his example drew others closer to God. Led by divine guidance, Hector followed his pastor to Orlando, Florida, where together they helped lay the foundation for Bethel Christian Church—the church family that surrounds us today. Through his faithfulness, his children, grandchildren, and generations after him came to know God. Hector did not seek recognition. He sought righteousness. He believed in protecting his family, serving his church, and walking humbly before the Lord. His life teaches us that strength does not have to shout, that love can be steady, and that faith, when lived consistently, can touch generations. Today, we grieve his passing on April 22, 2026, but we do not grieve without hope. Hector walked before the Lord in the land of the living—and now, he walks with Him in eternity. May we honor him not only with words, but by carrying forward the values he lived by faith, loyalty, humility, and love. Rest in peace, Hector. Your legacy lives on.
