Janet Lorraine Nunnelly

Janet Nunnelly was born on June 22, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Archie Carter and Ruth Carter. Janet was the oldest of 3 children and was raised on Long Island, NY where she graduated from Freeport High School. Surrounded by loving family, Janet grew up with a sense of purpose and goals. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Nunnelly; daughter, Tina Barksdale; sister, Bonita Horne; and brother Walter Roderick Carter. Janet touched the lives of many with her unwavering love, compassion, and dedication to serving others. As a mother, wife, and grandmother she embodied the essence of unconditional love. Janet immediately lit up any room she entered. She loved to laugh and tell funny stories to make other people laugh. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling, and volunteering in her community. Her life was a testament to the power of selflessness and the impact that one individual can have on the lives of those around her. Janet graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s degree in Exceptional Student Education and Florida State University with a master’s degree in Emotional Handicaps and Learning Disabilities. With a passion for helping others, she dedicated her life to making a positive impact on the lives of everyone that had the pleasure of meeting her. She worked in exceptional student education for 37 years; educating, empowering, providing support, and advocating for children and adults with disabilities. Her unwavering commitment to her students and their families left an indelible mark on the community she served. Janet was a faithful servant of God, finding comfort and strength in her unwavering faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Her favorite quote, “every day is a blessing,” became a guiding principle that she held close to her heart. It served as a constant reminder to embrace each moment, cherish the people in her life, and find joy in the simplest of things. Her faith in the Lord was a guiding light that provided her with a deep sense of purpose. Janet will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her warm and loving nature, her devotion to her family, and dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, kindness, and selflessness that will continue to inspire future generations. May we honor her memory by following her example of faith, love, and perseverance. May we continue to count it all joy when faced with trials, knowing that through them, our faith is refined and strengthened. Those left to cherish her memory are countless family and friends. Janet’s legacy continues with: her son, Wilfred Reynolds III; grand-children; Shakiyah Dewdney, Lance Barksdale, Jr., Jacob Reynolds, and Justin Barksdale; nieces, LaQuelle Frazier and Dominique Horne; and great-grandchildren; Nicholas Barksdale, Leticia Barksdale, Dayson Carter Reynolds, Kalina Dewdney, Kaiden Dewdney, Nahla Barksdale, Noelle Barksdale, Lenox Barksdale, and Kaleb Dewdney.
