Nancy Therese Hagerty

NANCY THERESE HAGERTY passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 29, 2020, in the presence of her loving husband, Paul, of 59 years. Nancy was born January 9, 1938 in Milwaukee, WI. Paul and Nancy were married in 1961. In addition to Paul, her husband and best friend, Nancy is survived by four children: Kathy Hagerty, Dan Hagerty (Patricia), Tim Hagerty (Katrin), and Patrick Hagerty (Jennifer). Nancy is also survived by five grandchildren: Paul Hagerty, Julius Hagerty, Jules Hagerty, Lily Hagerty, and McKenzie Howard, she is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Ruth Pavelchik and Anne (Thomas) Wamser. Her life was filled with many passions, her husband and family, her Church and faith, quality education for all, travel, contract bridge and many other pursuits. She began this journey at college where she studied education and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) in 1960. After her graduation she worked in the Milwaukee Public Schools for several years as a junior high school teacher and guidance counselor. She expanded her education and pursuit to help students with obtaining a Masters degree in guidance and counseling from UWM in 1962. In addition to education, a passion of Nancy and Paul's was to travel and meet new people and cultures. As a start in this lifelong pursuit of traveling, but always being together as a pair, Nancy and Paul, left their hometown and moved together abroad to Japan where she worked as a guidance counselor for the U.S. Department of Defense. Returning from abroad, Nancy continued her career as a guidance counselor in the Milwaukee Public Schools. While their children were young, she turned inward to ensure the education of her children and the building of a loving home by taking a ten-year hiatus from work to be home with her children. In 1977, Nancy and Paul left Milwaukee to continue on their journeys. With a joint focus on education, they embarked on a journey that spanned a 26-year career in locations in Macon, GA, Springfield, MO, and finally Seminole County, FL. In those years, Nancy returned to work as a high school guidance counselor at Central High School, Macon, GA, Central High School, Springfield MO, Crooms Alternative School in Seminole County, FL, retiring from her career at Winter Springs High School, Seminole County, FL in 2001. In addition to building the minds of our children, Nancy held leadership positions in many organizations helping the community around her. These include the following: President of Germantown Women’s Club, State Board Member Georgia Girl Scouts, President of Seminole County Mental Health Association. Nancy had other passions besides education and travel and over the years she was active in various community and church activities. Another passion of Nancy’s was enjoying and playing duplicate bridge. Nancy and Paul were one of the few couples who could play together as partners and still remain friends and in love. Combining her leadership skills with her love of bridge she held the following positions: President Orlando Metropolitan Bridge Club, President Unit 240 Regional Bridge Board, Board member of District 9 State of Florida Duplicate Bridge Board. With all these pursuits, she also had another key pillar in her life next to her husband. Her Church and Faith were key partners in her life and could be seen in the ideals that directed her life. Nancy was very active in her church. In recognition of her lifelong service, in 2018 Nancy received the “Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifices” papal honor for sustained and outstanding service to the Catholic faith. As a practicing Catholic all her life, her funeral Mass, the Rite of Christian Burial, will be at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in Oviedo, FL at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 5th. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hagerty Family Scholarship fund which is part of the Foundation for the Seminole County Public Schools.
