Sonia Mascarin de Diaz

Sonia, hija de Giliante y Tulia Mascarin, nació en Manizalez, Colombia, el 4 de Noviembre de 1940. Fue la cuarta de 8 hijos. A los 13 años se trasladó a Bogotá, la capital de Colombia, en busca de aventura y nuevos horizontes. Y allí logró estudiar y salir adelante por sus propios méritos, gracias a su tenacidad y dedicación. A los 24 años conoció a el amor de su vida, Fabio Díaz, con quien estuvo casada casi 50 años. Juntos tuvieron tres hijas: Sandra, Martha y Olga Lucía. Con los años la familia creció con sus yernos Eduardo y Todd y con la llegada de sus adorados nietos Tatiana, Ethan Manolo, Daniel Andrés y Julian Oliver. Sonia finalmente se mudó a Estados Unidos para estar más cerca de sus seres queridos. Excelente mujer y madre ejemplar, Sonia era devota de Dios y la Virgen del Perpetuo Socorro. Su fe guió todos los aspectos de su vida, incluyendo la crianza de sus hijas y su trato con el prójimo. Como le gustaba decir: “Me quito el pan de la boca para dárselo a los demás si es necesario”. Sonia perdió su larga batalla contra el ELA el 6 de Octubre de 2016. Aunque la enfermedad deterioró su cuerpo, nunca logró vencer su espíritu. Su corazón se fue lleno de amor y agradecimiento por todas la personas que tocaron su vida de una u otra manera pero en especial, por aquellas que le demostraron compasión, solidaridad, apoyo, cariño incondicional y oraciones, en los momentos más difíciles de su enfermedad. Sonia siempre será recordada por su fe, generosidad, bondad y espíritu emprendedor. Aunque la extrañaremos profundamente, sabemos que Sonia está en un mejor lugar. Esperamos que descanse en la paz eterna de Dios y nos llena de consuelo saber que hay un nuevo ángel en el cielo cuidando de nosotros. Hasta siempre Mami Sonia. Sonia, daughter of Giliante and Tulia Mascarin, was born in Manizalez, Colombia, on November 4, 1940. She was the fourth of eight children. At the age of 13 she moved to Colombia’s capital, Bogotá, in search of opportunity and new horizons. Through tenacity and hard work, she finished her studies and made a good life for herself. When she was 24, she met her husband of nearly 50 years, Fabio Díaz. Together they had three daughters: Sandra, Martha and Olga Lucía. The family grew with son-in-laws Eduardo and Todd and the arrival of her granchildren Tatiana, Ethan Manolo, Daniel Andrés and Julian Oliver, whom she adored. Sonia soon moved to the United States to be closer to her loved ones. An excellent human being and exemplary mother, Sonia’s faith and deep devotion to God and the Virgin of Perpetual Help guided every aspect of her life, including raising her children, grandchildren and her treatment of others. As she was fond of saying: “I will give others the bread that feeds me if they need it”. Sonia lost her long battle with ALS on October 6, 2016. Although ALS paralyzed her body, it was never able to vanquish her spirit. Sonia will always be remembered for her faith, generosity, kindness and enterprising spirit. She left with a heart forever grateful for the compassion and unconditional love, solidarity and prayers of her friends and relatives, especially for those who stood by her side during the worst moments of her illness. Although we will miss Sonia deeply, we know she is in a better place. We hope she rests in God’s eternal peace and we find solace in knowing that a new angel is watching over us from heaven.
