Jon Michael Stops

Jon Michael “Mike” Stops, age 80, of Lawrenceville, GA passed away peacefully on August 9, 2024 in Celebration, Florida. Mike was a graduate of Sarasota, Fl High School, Fl, Florida State University School of Business and Georgia State University with a Masters degree in Marketing. Mike was the owner of Benchmark Fixture Company in Lawrenceville, GA for 33 years. He was a proud servicemember of the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Seminole from 1966 until 1972 and receiving the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal serving during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville, GA for 26 years. Mike is survived by his daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Hoover (Heather Rice) of Richmond, VA, his brother Harry Kevin Stops (Luisa) of Orlando, Fl and his sister Barbara Stops O’Brien of Tallahassee, Fl; granddaughters Kate and Phoebe Hoover; Debra Martin (Willy), Holly Stops; grandsons Henry Hoover, George Stops, Gabriel Stops. He is also survived by his sisters in law Joan Fischer (Ted ) of Cleveland, GA, Jeni Simpson (Jonathan) of Monroe, GA who were Mike’s forever in-laws and family for 36 years including his Step Nephews Greg Fischer (Valerie) and Lee Fischer (Priscilla). he is predeceased by his loving wife Janis Hall Stops, Lawrenceville, GA of 32 years; Mother, Enid Janet Stops (Edgewater, Fl) and his Father, Harry Day Stops (Orlando, Fl); his son Michael Bennett “Benn” Stops (Tallahassee, Fl) and his brother David Lee Stops (Edgewater, Fl). Mike loved his tennis and pickleball sports and most of all the many Cruises that he and his wife Janis would take every year. The joy of sharing this together was both their passion. He developed a passion for good food and greatly enjoyed going out to dinner and eating great food with family. He also enjoyed sharing what he had with his extended family and his Chesire cat smile would light up his face. His time in the Navy was especially important and meaningful to him. A moment of joy was when he and his brother David, who had joined the Navy shortly after Mike enlisted were assigned to different ships that anchored in Japan and the two of them had a day to share together. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
